Down Under
Then the husband sheepishly asked and pointed, “Do people ever consider wallpapering the wall down below, under the counter?”
Somewhat perplexed, my eyes followed to where he was pointing. It was a large break in the wall of cabinets where a chair would fit and someone might sit to put on make up and get ready for the day. There was a 30” by 18” space of wall that I had completely overlooked.
“Oh, yes! Shoot. Wow. I totally missed that! Yes. Yes, that gets papered too!”
Bless my husband’s soul, he had been helping me on this job and had packed up all my tools and muttered under his breath, more to himself “I mean, I think that would be an as-requested item…” trailing off, not sure exactly what he meant by that but certainly trying to save the situation in someway.
I was just shocked at myself that I had not seen the space under the countertop in this one area! It just didn’t register and I had even taken pictures of the wall and sent them to the designer, “Mark this one complete!”
Funny story: I was installing beautiful Morris and Co. wallpaper in a remodeled primary bathroom and it was going so smooth! It was five panels and the ceilings were tall but not super tall, and I kept taking in the wall from the vanity countertop and up. The vanity was primarily made up of cabinets for storage, so in my mind, I blocked off the lower level of the wall. I had previously installed at this client’s home in the powder room and was hustling to finish this portion of the job by the end of the day.
I cut, glued, and hung five times, cutting around the sconce fixtures and the taking into account where the countertop dropped down a few inches. When it was all hung, I just stepped back and smiled. I packed up and called over the clients, a husband and wife, so we could all admire the transformation. It was stunning.
The best part of this job was that, these clients are AMAZING and the contractor and his team are AMAZING and the designer and her team are AMAZING so going back wouldn’t be hard on my part and everyone was so understanding. So back I went, in middle of the next week, and officially completed the wallpaper project. Plus, there is something thrilling about going back to see finished work with more fixtures installed, so I wasn’t upset. And now I will add - look down and all around when addressing spaces! You live, and learn.
